An Historic Witness
The present church of St Mary Abbots is only 130 years old, this year, but there has been a community of worship here for over 1,000 years.
The present building, designed by the 19th Century architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and built in 1872, is one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic style. It houses the tallest spire in London as well as fine stained glass windows including the famous “Healing” window funded by the Royal College of Surgeons. The Church Bells and Bellringers have an excellent reputation.
The Church is open daily extending a welcome and providing a place of sanctuary to over 50,000 visitors annually. It provides a focus for community life with weekly musical concerts and organ recitals and is used for local Civic Services. The mission work of the church includes annual events to raise funds for local and international causes extending as far as Papua New Guinea.
Past worshippers have included Isaac Newton, the Scientist, William Wilberforce, the anti-slave campaigner, and others such as George Canning, Beatrix Potter, Joseph Addison and HRH Princess Louise. In 1997 it became a focus of mourners for our late parishioner, Diana, Princess of Wales, with the lighting of many thousand votive candles and a remembrance service with over 1,000 people in attendance.
