ANNUAL MEETINGS OVER – OFFICIAL!

Last Tuesday we held the final of our four Annual Meetings so at last we have completed for 2008 the sequence of revising the Electoral Roll, holding separate Annual Meetings for each of our three churches, electing new representatives to the Deanery Synod holding the Annual Meeting of Parishioners and finally the Annual Parochial Church Meeting.   We congratulate all those elected to office, (see the notices on the boards) and in particular, ADRIAN WEALE, who joins Susan Lockhart as a new Parochial Warden.   Adrian worships at Christ Church, and we understand that he is the first Parochial Warden from the Vale of Eldon.   He is most warmly welcome.
You will also, if you couldn’t make the meeting, have been on tenterhooks wondering whether the New Parochial Scheme was approved.   It was – so you may now all sleep soundly.

Now we can get on with the work of being the Church!

ASCENSION DAY

However much the weather might have tried to dampen our spirits, we held a splendid celebration on Ascension day.

Following immemorial custom
(4 years old) nearly twenty people ascended the tower for a 7.30am service, with prayers and blessings of our parish and city from each face of the gallery, looking south, west, east and north, followed by coffee and croissants in the vestry.

At 9.30 our whole school processed into church and led a large congregation with parents and others in a  moving Sung Eucharist and including a special dramatic presentation by Year 3.

150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF ST PHILIPS, Earls Court Road

It was our privilege to welcome Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, to preside and preach – as always with great power and wit.   It was good to see so many from St Mary Abbots, from Christ Church, from St Georges, from other local churches, old members of St Philips returning to help the present congregation celebrate and commit themselves to the next century and a half of Christian witness and ministry.
The next KPN will contain a full account and many pictures!

NEW INTERNAL NOTICEBOARDS

Our thanks to the Friends of St Mary Abbots Church for their latest benefaction:  a folding set of noticeboards that at last gives us something decent on which to place our posters and notices.

Saturday 21 June      St MARY ABBOTS SUMMER FETE

Our annual Summer Fete – central to Kensington’s Social Calendar – will fill the Vicarage Garden with stalls, sideshows, games, fun, laughter and fundraising.
A talented & enthusiastic team has started the planning.   Either contact them or expect to be contacted! – see Max Croft, Alison Steel, Sally Bessada or  wardens.

NEW LECTERN BIBLE

Nigel Grieve, who plays so many roles in the life of St Mary Abbots (managing the Rotas of Sidemen and Readers at Choral Matins and Sung Evensong every Sunday, singing in the Voluntary Choir, etc) has most generously presented, in memory of his parents, the church with a magnificent leather-bound Lectern Bible, to replace the one we have used for the last century or so.   From the pews you probably won’t tell the difference as it’s still the Authorised Version (known to Americans and incorrect Englishmen as the King James Bible).   This munificent gift was presented and dedicated within Choral Matins on Sunday April 27th.

Which, most sadly, because she feels that the time has come to bow out gracefully, will also be the last occasion at which Catherine Lambert reads a Lesson in the normal course of things.   I am most grateful for the care and preparation taken by our Readers Sunday by Sunday, and Catherine’s reading has been an inspiration to many of us, making something poetic, meaningful and profound of even the most intractable passages of Scripture.

Simon Baker

We’re delighted to announce that the Church Council has appointed a new STEWARSHIP OFFICER.
Simon Baker has most generously agreed to take on this most important role with in the life of our church – so be prepared to receive midnight knocks on the door or cold calling from him at all hours of day or night to persuade you to sign up to the Stewardship Campaign – and support it at a level appropriate to your income and lifestyle!

ST MARY ABBOTS ARCHIVES

Our church has a splendid collection of historic archives, and we are extremely fortunate in the calibre of our Honorary Archivists, always eager to respond to every request for information.  Tony Carr-Gomm, our senior archivist, has decided to retire, after seventeen years in the post. How shall we replace him?  Perhaps a member of the congregation with historical interests might consider this task. Further details from <robertcook@cix.co.uk>.

CHILDREN ON SUNDAY

Visitors to our 9.30 Sunday Eucharist and even Bishops who hear about it are amazed at the number of children present. We now call this vital and expanding ministry

This is how the groups operate:

Caterpillars     0-3s (PreNursery)  in   St Mary Abbots School  basement.  One parent is expected to stay with their child while the other stays in the service.  This group is run by at least two volunteers.

Butterflies 3-5s (Nursery & Reception)  in St Mary Abbots School Hall.    One parent is expected to stay until their child is happy and confident in this setting and when there is an adequate parent/child ratio. This group is run by at least two volunteers

Juniors    5-8s (School Yr 1-3)  in  St Mary Abbots School Dining Room.    Led by two volunteers.
Please offer your help.

Seniors  8-11s (School Yr 4-6)   in  The Vicar’s Parlour    Led by one volunteer.

Junior Choir    8-12s   in  The Choir Vestry    Led by Julie Charles. (8671 0841)

The Junior Group is still desperately short of volunteers to help to run it. Please let Fr Rob Marshall know if you would like to offer your help (one Sunday a month at most), especially if your child is already attending this group!

ST MARY ABBOTS WEB SHOP  - The place for ALL your  Shopping!!!!!

From now on, most of the on-line shopping that you do can mow be accessed via our very own webshop portal – and everything you purchase, with out increasing its price at all, brings in a donation to the church.   http://www.buy.at/stmaryabbots

DO YOU ENJOY SINGING?

We are building up the occasions on which our Voluntary choir – both the adults and children - joins forces with the professional choir to sing at either the 9.30 Sung Eucahrist or 6.30 Evensong.   There are a number of such opportunities this autumn – so if you enjoy singing this would be a good time to think of joining the choir.   Contact Mark Uglow, our Director of Music, if your grown up, or Julie Charles for information about the Childrens Choir.

Weekday Services

In our church the round of praise, prayer and sacrament never ceases.  Every day we say Morning and Evening Prayer and the Holy Eucharist is celebrated.  This constant Godward activity is the very heart of who and what we are, and it is our privilege to make this offering on behalf of our whole parish, and those members of our congregation who cannot be present.  But the numbers of those who ARE present has dropped over the last few years to dangerously low levels.   A very few faithful souls now maintain this offering on behalf of the rest of you.

This is the very loveliest time of the year to start or renew this commitment – what could be nicer than praising God in a sunlit chapel first thing in the morning, or in the space between afternoon and evening?    Our full service times are given on the front cover.

WHY DON’T YOU JOIN US, ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK?

MEDITATION GROUP

Did you know that a Meditation Group meets every Wednesday lunchtime in the Resurrection Chapel?   It’s a conducted meditation, with help given onto the practice and purpose of meditation, so beginners won’t feel uncomfortable.  If you want further details, contact Margaret Lane.

SERVING AT THE ALTAR

One of the ways people contribute to the dignity of our worship – and which makes such a difference in a large and grand church like ours - is by joining the team of servers who assist the clergy with the preparation of the altar, carry the cross and candles etc etc.

We have a mixed team of men and women, boys and girls, young and old.   At the moment there are several vacancies –  might this be a way in which you could play a part in our worship?

Full training is given, and many of the tasks are simple.   Contact Fr Gillean or Susan Lockhart via the vestry.

BABIES……..………TODDLERS……………….PARENTS

Did you know that we run a Playgroup for preschool children every Friday morning in the Church Hall?   Places are limited, but priority is given to St Mary Abbot’s church families –  and there are currently a few vacancies.
